Comparing Spirituality and Religion

For the purposes of this web site and general discussions based on it the terms “spirituality” and “religion” will be used primarily as follows.
Spirituality will refer to the sense of “self” (atman), or “I am,” or such awareness a sentient being might have of itself that is often described as the “man in the machine.” That is, the sense of self that no machine made by the hands of man can have. Computers, even computers that run AI, are known to have no such self awareness. They just run programs written by humans. It can be shown how anything they do was determined by a program written by humans or selected from a list by means that cannot be truly random. Such machines can be proved to have no free will also. For example in order to play cards a computer must use a pseudo random number generator. A truly “random” choice requires a free will.
Humans with a sense of self awareness can also be certain they have a free will. That is for example that their decision to raise their left hand or their right hand can be their own decision, can reside in that “self” they perceive.
Long ago ancient Hindu philosophers determined that there is no circuitous route to establishing that the self (atman) exists. It is only perceived by turning in on itself. Because of this, arguments remain whether there is any special nature in the self or any free will anywhere. Self awareness also remains among quite many people anyway as indicating something “spiritual” in character does exist.
Religion will refer to what is commonly called “organized” religion. That is, the belief systems put in writing that outline guidance for the human spirit.
It does appear that the driving force behind morality is more a matter of spirituality than any particular religion.
Atheists, Nazis, Communists, and Social Democrats tend to be far less spiritual than other groups and so oppose long established morality as being too “controlling.” Whether control is a good or bad thing depends on what you are trying to control. Opposing theft and murder are likely good controls.
At the same time most of the “various” religions are on the political right, agree more with each other than with atheists, and support long established morality like private property or monogamy. The reason they so agree might have much to do with their spirituality.
Trump and friends are not very spiritual and can even be said to oppose spirituality and solutions based on spirituality whatever “religion” they might claim.
